Chapter Ten
âSo thatâs three of your ten?â Mackenzie said.
âCan we not talk about that stupid list I made all those years ago and focus on what this Melinda woman said to me? You guys are my rock. You need to pull me down from the ledge,â Eliza said.
âHate to break it to you, youâve locked yourself in the bathroom while the family is getting ready for dinner. Donât you think theyâre going to assume youâre taking a number two?â Juliet asked.
Eliza wrinkled her nose. âI said I was also changing into my swimsuit. Perfect explanation for being in my room, and I didnât say I was going to the bathroom.â
No, sheâd locked the main bedroom door, then the bathroom door, just so she could have a private conversation with her two best friends.
âI want to meet this Melinda,â Mackenzie said.
âMe too.â This came from Juliet.
âNeither of you are going to meet her because youâre going to tell me that what she says is lies. Iâm freaking out right now, and I need my two best friends to be logical. Not wanting to come and get your palms read.â She groaned. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean it like that. You can come down, by all means. I wouldnât mind.â She would have loved the company.
Mackenzie and Juliet laughed.
âNot helping,â Eliza said.
âYou, yourself, have said many times how you donât believe in any superstitions and yet, youâre on the phone, telling us about a woman youâve met once, and now youâre scaring yourself about it.â
âShe was really scary,â Eliza said. âI donât know. I think itâs because the other women were so convinced what she said was real.â
âWhat other women?â
She told them about Prestonâs brothers, their wives, and what happened.
Silence filled the line after she explained the dynamic to them.
âYou guys still there?â she asked.
âWeâre still here,â Juliet said.
âWhy have you gone silent on me, guys?â She waited.
âEr, no reason at all. Letâs face it, thereâs no way you and Preston are going to be sleeping together. I mean having sex. Youâre sharing a bed, but there is a distance between the two of you. Itâs not like youâre wrapped around each other?â
Eliza cringed. She hadnât told them about what happened this morning. How sheâd woken up to him holding her breast or the feel of him against her ass.
She was in deep trouble.
âYou know what, you guys are so right about everything. Iâm reading far too much into this, and I just have to focus. I better be getting ready before they think Iâm taking a number two.â She frowned, slapping her forehead with her palm. âI better go. Bye.â She hung up the phone and blew out a breath. âEverything is going to be fine.â
She stood up and removed her clothes, then changed into the swimsuit and tied a robe around her waist.
Eliza wished she had Julietâs body. This was going to be a disaster. Why did she agree to a swim? Her life was going to be over before she knew it.
